Welcome to our Numeracy Blog.  Here we will share with you what we have been learning during our Numeracy sessions.  We might even post a few photos and videos so you can admire our mathematical thinking.

This week we have been completing our Numeracy samples for our Learning Journals.  One of the new concepts that we have been learning is that "= means balance", rather then just the answer.  Here is an example that demonstrates the  idea:

Room 6 and Room 10 have raised exactly the same amount of money for school camp by selling fertilizer and chocolates.  Room 10 raised $575 selling fertilizer and $254 selling chocolates.  Room 6 raised $643 selling fertilizer.  How much did Room 6 raise selling chocolates?

575 + 254 = 643 + _______

Have fun working this one out at home.

We have been learning how to convert decimals to fractions and visa versa e.g.

0.4 = 4
        10

5.6 = 5  6
            10

Did you know that improper fractions have a larger numerator then denominator? e.g

34 = 3  4
10       10

Over the next few weeks we are going to be learning how to multiply using a variety of strategies.  We need to focus on mastering instant recall of our multiplication and division facts to help us calculate accurately.
